What to Do When You Get a New Pet

Published on March 19th, 2015

So, you have decided to open up your home to a new animal. Getting a new pet is very exciting, but there’s much to do to prepare! What should you do to get your life ready for the momentous occasion of taking care of a pet? How much does it cost? Do I need a veterinarian? Fear not, here are a few tips to help the transition go smoothly:

Choosing a Name

Choosing a name may not seem like such a big deal for some people, but in truth, it can be. Consider that a pet such a cat or a dog can live close to fifteen years. Pick a name that you would not change through its lifespan. You don’t want to confuse it. Whether you choose to name it after celebrities or other famous animals such as Lassie or Garfield, or even a family member, it should be one that you are comfortable with.

Get a Vet for the Pet

Whether you get a kitten or puppy from its mother, or you rescue a dog from a shelter, you should get it checked out by a veterinarian. What many people do not know is that you can get more than just shots at the vet. New owners can receive a wealth of information concerning pet care from these animal practitioners such as info about food, money obligations, preventative treatments, and other responsibilities. You’ll get peace of mind with having a place to take your pet in an emergency, or if it needs medical attention, and for preventative and regular care. A vet can also help you answer any other questions you may have about your furry friend.

Buy Pet Supplies

Before you bring your pet home, consider stocking up on supplies to make the transition that much easier, not to mention safer for your pet. Make a list of items you’ll need ranging from food, treats, toys, bedding, crates, carriers, food and water bowls, flea and tick medications, grooming products, collars, tags, leashes, litter boxes, cleaning supplies, and more. Proper preparation will keep you organized so that you and your pet can have a happy and comfortable start in a new environment.
