Vet Appointment Anxiety

Published on June 18th, 2016

It is important for your pet to have routine visits to a veterinary clinic to make sure they are healthy and receive vital vaccinations that help prevent diseases. From regular examinations to emergency cases, you should find a trusted veterinarian to care for your animals. While at a checkup, pets might be poked with needles to draw blood and thoroughly examined to determine if they are growing properly. Often this interaction can leave the animal uneasy when it comes time for their next visit to the vet. However, you can take steps to help prepare them for the trip and ease their anxiety while at the clinic.

Ways to Help Your Pet at Their Next Appointment

  • Often pets are uneasy with the car ride to the clinic, especially if they are not used to traveling in an automobile. You can help ease this tension by occasionally taking them for a ride with you to get them used to riding in a car.
  • One way to help ease a pet is by taking along their favorite treat. Positive reinforcement has been proven to work very well with pets, especially dogs.
  • If your pet dreads the pet carrier, be sure to keep it out at home so they feel it is a part of their daily lives. Again, a treat before and after being in the pet carrier can do wonders.
  • If all else fails, speak with your veterinarian, they will sometimes prescribe your animal with anti-anxiety medication to help calm them before the visit.
  • More than anything, your pet needs to feel comfortable in the clinic and with their veterinarian. There is a big difference between your pet not wanting to go to the vet since they may experience a little bit of pain sometimes and truly having terrible anxiety about just being in the clinic.
