Pet Healthcare Guidelines

Published on May 18th, 2015

A healthy pet is a happy pet. That is our mantra at Portage Park Animal Hospital & Dental Clinic. We understand that your pets are your family. Just like people, they can be vulnerable to sickness and health problems. That is why we offer regular health examinations, vaccination, parasite prevention, and full dental care for your pets. Schedule your pet’s yearly checkup with us. Here is a breakdown of a few helpful healthcare guidelines for your furry friend.

Spay/Neuter

Over eight million pets end up in shelters every year in the United States. Spaying and neutering is a great way to reduce the number of unwanted animals and save the lives of animals waiting to find homes.

Regular Exams

Once a year, you should take your pet in for a check-up. This will include a full physical exam, and may include vaccinations and routine bloodwork if needed.

Parasite Prevention

Parasites can be found in almost every dog or cat, including tapeworms and fleas. Whether you are worried about topical parasites or those located inside the body, it’s important to take precautions against both through year-round prevention.

Stimulating Environment

Enriched environments can help with long-term health care for your animals. Your pet needs outlets such as social activity, exercise, play time, and toys.

Healthy Weight

Just like with humans, cats and dogs can become obese or overweight. Being overweight can cause many health problems, such as arthritis, diabetes, and cancer. Helping your pet maintain a healthy weight is the best way to prolong their life.

Microchipping

Whether you live in the country or city, your dog could get lost. Of all the lost pets around the US, only about 14 percent find their way back home. Microchipping can help you find your lost pet quickly and efficiently.
